First 'Galloway' style run ...

And I'm undecided.

I just did 30 minutes in the 'Galloway' style ... that is, I ran for 4 minutes and then walked for one.

And in the 30 minutes, I travelled 4.8kms

It's hard to say what I would have run if I'd done a 'straight' run ... it was, after all, an afternoon run (always slower for me) and only my second 'real' run in weeks. But I suspect I was a few minutes faster than I would have been if I had done my usual run.

In fact, if I compare today's data with the same run in October (before my achilles problems really bit) my first 3k was much faster - and the last 2k was about the same.

Having said that, I didn't get the same satisfaction I would have from running, uninterrupted, for 5km.

So I dunno.

I'll give it another try on Thursday - preferably in the morning - and see how I go.

Yay! I ran 5K!

I did the regular run with the Brisbane Roadrunners today, and as always enjoyed myself.

It was my first 'formal' 5K run in about 6 weeks (since running in Cairns in November, in fact) ... so I wasn't unhappy with my slow time.

I rain 31:50 (odd) ... but was chatting pretty7 much the whole way with a firsdt-time runner.

"John" was doing his first 5k run ... he's a cyclist who wants to join his wife in a half-marathon later this year, so decided to join her at the BRRC runs ... and asked if he could use me to 'pace' himself.

I was glad to do so - it kept me honest, too ... and we talked about everything from medical research to house prices.

It was, as a\I say, a good run ... and I felt no ankle-pain.

It's tightening up a bit now, 4 hours later, but I'll do some more strtches soon, and go for a walk to walk that off.

No 'Galloway' run today - I'll try that on Tuesday .. today, just the joy of running. Loved it!

It's hard, when walking, not to break into a run ...

I did an 80 minute walk yesterday, along the riverfront near work, and I tried my hardest to maintain a 6km/hr pace.

And you know the hardest part?

It wasn't that I would slow down so much ... but that I'd want to break into a jog!

A fellow user of the CalorieKing Australia website once said her "feet just wanted to run on their own".

I know what she meant!

Rest day today - tomorrow's a 5K run with the Brisbane Roadrunners - the first time I've run, really, for week.

Wish me well! :)

First 'Galloway' style run ...

I tried the run/walk training method expounded by Jeff Galloway yesterday, and have to say ... I'm still not entirely convinced.

I know that I can run 10km in around 65 minutes - 'cause I've done it before. And I know I can run 5km in around 30 minutes.

But I also know that when I tried on the treadmill (*) yesterday, doing 4 mins at 10km/hr and 1 min at 6km/hr, (repeat 6 times) that meant that I only ran 4.5km in 30 minutes.

Yes, the 'interval' nature of the training meant I burned more calories - but at the end, I felt no 'stronger', or 'better' than I would have if I had run at a steady pace.

Having said that, I haven't run regularly for weeks, and so I may not have been able to maintain the 10km/hr pace required for a 30 minute 5km - so I'll try a straight 5km run on Sunday with the roadrunners, and then try the run/walk again on Tuesday.

(*) This stupid achilles tendon is still a tad tender - so I thought that running on the road was probably not all that wise. But jeez treadmills can be boring!

Merry Christmas ... my training's underway :)

Just a quick note to say I ran today - after Christmas lunch, I might add!

It was only a 4.3k run, or just over 30 minutes ... and my ankle's a bit tender this evening - but I reckon I will be able to maintain the training schedule set out last week.

So underway I am :)

The run was around the Brisbane suburb of Westlake -- where my sister and her husband live, and where we had the holiday feast.

After eating and drinking too much, including some dessert that was evil incarnate, I took off for a gentle jog .. running at around 7-minutes/kilometre, or 11-minute miles ... which according to www.jeffgalloway.com means I'd run a half-marathon in about 2hr 50 mins. I could live with that.

It also means, if I stick with the Galloway training method, I should run for 2:30 then walk for 1 minute. I'm still not sure about that ... but will give it a try when I run again on Thursday.

That felt Guuuuud!

Yay.

I went for a run today - and it didn't hurt.

Well, it hurt - but only the good "you haven't run for weeks so your muscles have forgotten how" hurt ... not the bad "I am your Achilles tendon - and gonna make you pay for jarring me" type of hurt.

I had to go for some blood tests ... which required me to fast (no breakfast!) ... and to stop my tummy grumbling while I waited for the pathologist to open, I decided to run the 3km there instead.

And it was fun!

So, after having them take some blood samples, I ran back, too.

That wasn't quite as much fun .. partly because it was warming up by then, but partly because I was carrying, in one hand, my water bottle, and in the other an (empty) 5 litre plastic bottle, into which I have to pee for 24 hours.

Still it could be worse.

It could have been a full 5-litre plastic bottle.

Wouldn't want to confuse THAT with my drink bottle, I can tell ya! :)

Anyway, it felt good to be running again ... even if it was only 2 x 3km slow jogs.

Woot!

Well, that was succesful - not!

I hate injuries.

I've been unable to run for weeks ... unable to run propeoply for months ... and the issue still not completely resolved.

Bloody achilles tendonitis!

Ah well ... at least now I know WHAT the problem is, and the Physio's giving me some exercises to deal with it.

So now I can get back into training.

I've reset the targets .. I'm still aiming for a marathon in Honolulu in December - and will do the half-marathon in Brisbane in April.

My nephew, Corey, is gonna join me in doing the half - so I've set up a training program (well, to be honest, Jeff Galloway at http://www.jeffgalloway.com/ has set it up - I just converted it to kilometres, and added some dates.)

Anyway - here it is.
